About Us

York Photographic Society (YPS) meets at the Central Methodist Church Hall, York (see Location Map) on Wednesday nights at 7.30 pm from September through to May.

We are the longest established photographic society in the Yorkshire Photographic Union (YPU), having been founded in 1888 and reforming after a break between 1905 -1932.YPS likes to think of itself as a friendly welcoming society willing to share knowledge, experience and enthusiasm with like minded photographers. This also extends to photographers in other countries and in the last few years we have had exchanges with two societies in Romania.

Our membership includes all ages, abilities and photographic interests, whether prints or slides, traditional or contemporary in outlook. As digital imaging has gained in popularity so a number of members have traded in their darkroom equipment in favour of digital cameras, computers and digital imaging software. Some are even combining digital techniques with old processes such as cyanotypes or simple equipment such as pin hole cameras.

The Programme of YPS provides a variety of internal and external speakers on a wide range of topics. While we do have some competitions the emphasis is on showing and discussing work rather than seeing it as something competitive. This is reflected in the joint and individual exhibitions that members are involved in such as the ongoing one at the York District Hospital.

This year, following the continued success of our Back 2 Basics evenings, we are running a series of ‘How To’ evenings split between Adobe Photoshop, for those wanting to get an introduction to the most commonly used digital imaging software, and traditional Camera Techniques for those wanting to get a better understanding of how to use their equipment. For further details see Programme.

New members are always welcome and further information can be obtained from our Secretary (Lewis Outing) tel: 01904 700510 email: info@yorkps.org.uk
